Before I read the writings about the reflection of designer and design value from David and Yanning in this blog, I got the chance to read the paper, Reflective design, that Prof, Lim recommended me. I was glad that I could be addicted myself in rethinking of the kinds of problems with them. It was my big pleasure that I could read the units of their thoughts. And through their writings, I found the ambiguity as a resource for design, something like the nemesis, that we are attempt to find the obvious relationship in doing design or living as a designer. However, I think it is also true that ambiguous situations require people to participate in making meaning. (In fact, the ambiguity as a resource for design is also a paper that Will, the tall guy, recommended me that might be helpful to develop our design solution for CHI student competition, but he makes me confused more so, I don’t want to say that I like any kinds of ambiguous things) I could understand why David and Yanning have concern and I am also trying to find my answer with the reflection of designer or reflective design in order to resolve my dubiousness and curiosities these days during reading them. For this blog, I just hope to add the frame of problem space for my realization into the areas where I am already suffocating these days; nevertheless, I want to study with you guys together.
In the paper, the ambiguity as a resource for design they argue that it is a resource for design that can be used to encourage close personal engagement with system. They illustrated this with examples from contemporary arts and design practices, and distinguished three board classes of ambiguity according to where uncertainty is located in the interpretative relationship linking person and artifacts.
Ambiguity of information finds its source in the artifact itself,Ambiguity of context in the socio-cultural discourse that are used to interpret it, Ambiguity of relationship in the interpretive and evaluative stance of the individual
Although the focal point of the paper is attempt to describe or divided the ambiguity issued in HCI and Design areas into that kinds of ambiguity above, I think we, as designers, found the kinds of ambiguities when designing, we reflect user’s context, we reflect our interpretations and evaluations of which we designed, and we reflect ourselves as a designer. We are like being in the ecological cycle. When reading the dissertation for Ph. D degree from Prof. Lim at IIT, I had thought it was awesome since at that time it was one of my curiosities; in the context aroused for a short time, how to analyze a user’s context in design field, how to code the every unit of the contexts, how to combine the units, and how to apply the context coded for design solution. I realize now that the dissertation is the result of struggling to deal with the ambiguity of user’ context aroused in unconsciously and consciously states although she did not mention it.
Perhaps, like there is no a perfect theory to cover the whole situations in this world or like the theory is so perfect that the characteristic of the theory disappear somewhere else, and the theory changes its merit to attract people’s attentions, to be too general in dealing with meticulous phenomenon, for me, Designing is also something like a theory that cannot be concomitant with the whole kinds of layers in this world, so that design cannot have one interpretation of one layer or multiple layers regarding information, user, society, and reflection of designers ourselves.
It is the opportunity for me to think if the property of a certain kinds of the ambiguity/anti-standardization can create various design solutions as David and Yanning said in their own writings. And based on my superficial experience as a designer, designer’s creativity is the natural result caused in the disordered process in which the chaos/ambiguities in a designer’ mind conflicts, rather than logical/theoretical design process. It seems like my problems if I want to use my left brain side or my right brain side at this school, or I want to be a designer or engineer. I just hope I can learn as much as I can digest.
In designing, the ambiguity enables us, designers to create the solutions through understanding the limitation of the ambiguity, and to feel designing is the more attractive area, by reflecting ourselves, and finally, I hope we will be proud of ourselves as designers.
I just want to reflect the nemesis of designing though my realization of the ambiguity as we want to cover. What do you think about that design is nemesis or not?
